WHAT IS A STREET MAINTENANCE SALES TAX?
The Texas Tax Code authorizes all cities to establish a special sales tax to repair and maintain existing city streets. A city's voters must approve the establishment or continuation of the tax. Currently, one-half of one-cent of sales tax is collected from all sales transactions within the City of Grandview that are subject to sales tax.
For every $1 spent within the city limits of Grandview, the city collects two cents:
1 cent goes into the General Fund
.50 goes into Street Maintenance (must reauthorize every 4 years)
.25 goes into Economic Development Type A
.25 goes into Economic Development Type B
The funds collected provide cost-effective rehabilitation and preventive maintenance of public streets within the city limits of Grandview. The goal is to improve mobility and condition and maintain roadways to prevent deterioration. The tax may not be used to build new streets or sidewalks and cannot be used on state or federal highways or roads, nor designated county roads.
HOW LONG HAS GRANDVIEW UTILIZED SALES TAX FOR STREET MAINTENANCE?
The City of Grandview held an election to lower the tax being collected for 4A tax and 4B tax from one-half cent to one-quarter cent to enable the street maintenance tax to be collected to fund this vital mobility infrastructure within the City.
The first month the tax was collected was April 2016. This tax can only be collected for 4 years without another election. The City held a second election in November 2019, and the voters agreed to continue the collection of this tax for another four years.
